Hi, I’m the founder and owner of MKC. I have paddled all over the world, from the glorious Futalefu river in Patagonia to half way around Australia including the marvelous Sydney Harbor (about which I wrote Keep Australia On Your Left about that 4000 mile journey), as well as Alaska, Scotland, the Galapagos, Hawaii, and Costa Rica.
A career sea kayaking instructor and guide for MKC, Carey became captivated with stand up paddle boarding over the last decade. Mr. Bond is co-founder of Suplogix, a research think tank dedicated to studying the science of stand up paddle boarding and pioneered the first ever electromyography study of the sport. Carey’s dedication to teaching and guiding is matched by his lifelong passion for design. A graduate of Yale University and trained at the graduate level as an industrial designer, Carey specializes in products and equipment for paddle sports.
Fiona Cousins started kayaking at age 10, and then forgot how much fun it could be until she hit 30 and took a paddling trip to Nova Scotia. After paddling with pilot whales, she was hooked and took further trips to Newfoundland and the San Juan Islands, as well as starting to learn her way around the Hudson. Fiona bought an Explorer in 2005 and paddled around Long Island in 2007. Since then she has continued to learn paddling skills and is most excited by paddling in rough water or unstable, fast boats.. She is a BCU level 4 Sea Kayak leadership award and I am qualified through ACA as a level 4 instructor. She volunteered as a kayak instructor at the program that Lee Reiser runs at the 145th St North River pool through the winter last year and expect to do that again this year.
Kam Truhn has paddled in the San Juan Islands, Newfoundland, and many bodies of water in between, including the Boundary Waters of Minnesota, the Great Lakes, and all over the New York Metro area. His love of the sport is broad ranging; he is equally at home racing, surfing, rolling, exploring quiet backwaters looking for washed up treasure, and in the workshop building and repairing boats. Kam has paddled in many races around the North Eastern U.S. including the Mayor’s Cup Manhattan circumnavigation races and the 3 day, 90 mile Adirondack Canoe Classic. He has been a guide and instructor for the past 10 years and is always excited to share an adventure or help a student develop new skills. ACA level 4 coastal kayaking instructor and BCU 3 Star.
Jonathan started with MKC as a client in the Spring of 2006, taking their signature series of Paddle Basics classes and has been an avid paddler ever since. He bought his first boat in 2008, and later that year won the sea kayak division in the Mayor’s Cup Championship race around Manhattan. Jonathan’s love of kayaking has taken him all over the World. He is active in the local boating community, particularly with respect to water quality issues in the Hudson River Estuary and its tributaries. Jonathan began guiding for MKC in 2009, and loves introducing people to the joys and challenges of paddling in the Hudson and New York Harbor.
Jules started working at MKC back in 2005. Coming from a rowing background in her hometown of Buenos Aires, she quickly learned the ways of the New York City waterways, first as an assistant guide, working with Eric and Carey who helped her become a competent guide in her first season. She has been part of the company ever since and from October to February this year paddled from Manhattan’s Pier 84 to Miami with Louanne – and they became the Atlantic Supergirls).
Richard Chen See
Richard started kayaking in the San Francisco Bay almost thirty years ago. Some of his favorite waters in which to play flow around Indonesia, New Zealand, Brazil and around the USA in Hawaii, Alaska, California, Colorado, Florida, Maine, and, of course, New York City. In 1998, he joined the MKC team when they were operating out of a small windowless storage room at Chelsea Piers. It has been an exciting journey watching the community of enthusiasts for kayaking, and now stand up paddle boarding, grow span roots in Hudson River Park.

A career veteran of the dance world, her credits include the Amy Marshall Dance Company, David Grenke Projects, Gabrielle Lamb Dance, and other notable New York City and international choreographers. She fuels her work in the outdoor and fitness industries with an extensive background in anatomy, kinesiology, and the study of functional movement and biomechanics. Gwen was raised in a canoe on the quiet waters of Michigan, but her interest in paddling really took off when her dad brought home a couple of used kayaks when she was 14. When Gwen moved to NY she took to the bigger bouncier waters of the Hudson and Long Island Sound. When she learned to roll in the muddy Hudson, things really took off. Her favorite kayak trips are those that involve breaking surf, wildlife sightings, time spent upside-down, lighthouses, beach combing in remote locations, or excellent lunches. She is currently an ACA level 3 instructor, and has volunteered for the Yonkers Paddling and Rowing Club, including their winter youth program at the Yonkers YMCA.
Pablo is an all-round athlete; he’s done track and field, cross country, tennis, cycling, soccer, swimming and over the past few years kayaking and SUP. After working as a lifeguard for the New York City Parks & Recreations Dept. in the Red Hook Recreational Center and Coney Island for 5 years, Pablo decided to join the awesome crew at MKC. With only one year of experience guiding tours Pablo’s enthusiasm to develop his skills and share his knowledge with all his clients is exuberant!
Taylor is an implant from Chicago where he started his kayaking days years ago. Learning to paddle in the north woods of Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, he has run rapids in the Midwest, kayaked down the Chicago river, and ridden waves in both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. This summer was his first with Manhattan Kayak but it was remarkably successful and he hopes to have many more.
Tom is a native New Yorker who has just finished up his studies in Beantown, earning a BA in English Literature and Business Administration at Boston University. Don’t worry, he has retained all of his New York loyalties, and while his area of study may seem stodgy and more suited for the indoors, Tom has been kayaking with Manhattan Kayak Company since he was a wee little one in 2004 as a ‘camper’ with the Chelsea Piers Urban Summer Camp ran by MKC. Tom was brought in as a guide when he became to old to attend camp as a kid, and soon started guiding year round in 2009.
Seth has been a lifelong outdoor adventure and fitness enthusiast. After years as marathon runner, he found his way into paddle sports in the early 1990’s after suffering a running injury. Seth has since developed a passion (some may say obsession) for Paddle boarding (SUP) and you can frequently find him paddling the waters from New York’s Hudson River and Long Island Beaches to exotic locations in Maui, Kauai, Oahu , Costa Rica, Portugal, Miami, and Brazil. He loves to share this passion and to introduce new people to the Sport of Stand up Paddling. When he is not out paddling you can often find him out hiking or practicing yoga.
Samantha discovered yoga as a teenager. Seeking to deepen her practice and knowledge, she attended a 200-hour teacher training course at Yoga To The People, a Yoga Alliance registered school, and she graduated with her teaching certification. Samantha has taught Hatha Yoga Flow/Vinyasa classes at Golden Bridge Yoga NYC and Vinyasa classes at Hunter College, where she has also guest lectured psychology classes on the power of yoga, meditation, and breath-work as it pertains to health, stress management, and coping. Samantha studied Ashtanga Yoga under the teaching of Lori Brungard, a student of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, the “Father of Ashtanga.” Samantha combines the strength, focus, and flexibility of a Vinyasa Flow class with the balance and strength of a SUP class. She has been a part of the MKC team since May 2013.
Born and raised in South Florida, Brandon grew up with an instinctual need to be on or near the water. Luckily, he stumbled into our boathouse one afternoon in the summer of 2012 and soon there after, eagerly started guiding as an assistant guide and quickly learned the ropes and became a senior guide. As MKC’s resident architect, Brandon brings a wealth of information for those interested in NYC architecture and urban history. He’s always eager to share some fun facts about the skyline or help someone develop their skill set further.
Born and raised in Alaska, LouAnne moved to New York to pursue a career in the theater industry. Life had different plans for her and led her to the boathouse in the spring of 2011. As she had grown up kayaking, Pier 84 quickly became her home away from home, and the MKC team, family. She was a senior ‘hybrid’ SUP and kayak Instructor in her first season and is an Atlantic Supergirls who SUP’ed from NYC’s Pier 84 to Miami from October to February this year.
