Autumn Kayaking, Stand Up Paddle Boarding & Outdoor Fitness at MKC

Autumn Kayaking, Stand Up Paddle Boarding & Outdoor Fitness at MKC

Full October schedule online by September 1, 2015

Fall-foliage-MKC-2Autumn is an ideal time for paddling in the Northeast! Most of you know buy now how the full body MKC technique for paddling kayaks and sups generates a lot of heat and water temperatures stay on the mild side well into Fall.

Manhattan Kayak Company facilitates the longest paddling season in the region with the full range of paddling and fitness services that we have.  While our regular season ends on or about October 31, we still offer paddling events after that for those of you who have become experienced in season paddlers and have the necessary clothing. We have wetsuits and sprayjackets to prolong your comfort into late October, but after that you will want to invest in some neoprene socks/booties and gloves. A good pullover hat goes a long way as well. We are more than happy to discuss these choices with you.

Where To Get Outfitted

I recommend Northwest River Supplies (NRS) for a great online source to get outfitted for cool to cold weather paddling. I recommend calling or visiting Paragon Sporting Goods, Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS), REI, New York Kayak Company or the Patagonia Store in NYC, Jersey Paddler in Brick NJ, Campmor in Paramus NJ for a your brick and mortar options

Winter-at-MKCHowever, first and foremost is to have learned and logged your hours with us in fair weather, and that you are comfortable with our equipment in the variety of conditions that the Hudson Rivers currents and New York City’s weather can challenge us with.  There is plenty of time to do this between now and mid October so please take advantage of all the classes, trips and tours available.  If some of the timing does not work out, arrange a private with us so we can bring up to speed one on one.

What You Need to Know

It is important that decked kayakers have done their wet exits and are familiar with getting back into their kayaks with guides assistance. It is equally important that Stand Up Paddlers are comfortable with remounting their boards! This is the time to practice as the water temperatures hovering around 80 degrees. Skillbuild classes and privates are great times to do this.

In the next month or so, it will be best to have your  “favorite” model of kayak or sup from our current fleet established. This is the boat or board you are most comfortable in or on. The later season is a time to go with reliability over flash.

Keep your eyes open for the Fall Outdoor Fitness Programs, fall foliage Tours and late autumn programming in the next MKC newsletter.

Cheers

Eric
