The 7th Annual SEA Paddle NYC
On August 9th, over a hundred stand up paddleboarders took to the waters off Manhattan for the 7th annual SEA Paddle NYC. This amazing event, a fundraiser for the Surfers’ Environmental Alliance (SEA), raises money for environmental preservation, a number of non-profit autism organizations and this year, for Hurricane Sandy relief efforts. This years race offered two courses: a short 5 mile scenic tour of Manhattan’s west side or the full, 26.5 mile version around the island, which of course our intrepid crew handily tackled
Our Amazing Team
Here at Manhattan Kayak Company we like to practice what we preach and our SUP team of Eric Stiller, Carey Bond, Shannon MacDowell and Seth Bloomgarden took to the water at a bright 7:30 in morning to start the 26.5 mile marathon paddle around Manhattan. Over 130 SUP participants, from as far afield as Hawaii, joined out courageous gang as they battled the waves, swells and barges to get to the finish line. It was an unforgettable day, in spite of the weather and everything nature had to throw their way!
From their picturesque start underneath the Brooklyn Bridge, our team and the entire crowd of boards turned north as they tried evading pilings, boats and falling into the harbor. The course ended on the West Side of Manhattan at the Chelsea Piers on the Hudson River, but not before over half (79!) of the participants bowed out. Not our fearless team though, as Carey, Shannon, Maggie, Esther and Seth all battled the strong headwinds and were proudly part of the 51 finishers of the race
Us & The SEA
With over $1.7 million raised since 2007 for it’s programs the Surfers’ Environmental Alliance (SEA) is committed to the preservation and protection of the environmental and cultural elements that are inherent to the sport of surfing. The SEA was founded by surfers who wanted to do something to protect the ocean, beaches and coastlines, and keep the planet a safe place to surf. We at Manhattan Kayak Company are proud to be a supporter of such a great organization and want to recognize our entire amazing 2013 Sea Paddle NYC team, their support crew, family, and friends for making it such a success.
Our team had a blast and survived the trying conditions, and we all would like to also thank the SEA staff and volunteers for keeping everyone safe and happy in spite of those conditions. We can’t wait till next year!
