Skills Progression

We keep groups safe by making sure everyone’s at the same level.

  • Beginner: hasn’t finished Basics classes or been pre-screened.
  • Intermediate: finished Basics at any time in the past.
  • Advanced: finished 4 Intermediate trips this year.
  • Expert: finished 3 Advanced trips this year. Eligible for boat storage.

Running or gym fitness ≠ Paddle fitness. Prior year’s paddling doesn’t carry forward. If you take the winter off, start at Intermediate again in May. Winter paddlers stay sharp and leapfrog fair weather friends.

Boat Storage

Boat storage is for expert-level paddlers who want to use their own boat.

  • Sign the Paddle Log at the Paddler’s Post.
  • Safety kit: white light, signaling device, VHF radio, cell phone, keycard.
  • Buddy up: avoid launching solo; come to Socials to find partners.

Cool/cold water = wetsuit/drysuit. See “What to Wear”.

What to Wear & Etiquette

Quick Read: What to Wear.

Wetsuit season: Nov 1 – Dec 20
Drysuit season: Dec 21 – Apr 30

  • Label personal gear with your name.
  • Take home wet/smelly booties & clothes.
  • Use the member racks for your paddle, PFD, and drysuit.

Dress for immersion. Be ready to capsize.

Reuse a Drysuit

Our drysuit reuse program gives underused suits a new life and helps paddlers join winter trips without the high cost of buying one.

  • Donate or sell: we’ll add it to our pool.
  • Borrow: use it for a season; return later.
  • Need Repairs? Contact River Connection.
