Take your kayak and paddleboard skills to the next level in NYC. Any advanced paddler should be able to control their boat and rescue others in tough conditions. Each private session focuses on crucial areas to open up a whole new level of adventure and self-sufficiency.

Completing the Kayak Basics 1-4 or SUP Basics 1-4 - either with a class or privately - are highly recommended beforehand.

 

 

Footwork for Power and Agility

Footwork

Are your feet planted in one position on the paddleboard? Free up your feet and enhance your forward SUP strokes using staggers and shuffles. Feel how cross steps and hop backs can shift bodyweight for added power. Led by ACA Level 3 SUP Instructors. 2 hour private session.

Prerequisite - SUP Basics 4 or equivalent.

Dynamic Steering and Progressive Turns

Learn more advanced SUP strokes and enhance your steering with sculling draws, canted strokes, low brace pivot turns, and pry strokes in moving water. These will improve board control and balance in any conditions. Led by SUP Level 3 Instructors. 2 hour private session.

Refining Your Forward Stroke

Forward Stroke

Perfect your foundational stroke using a special series of drills in the Intrepid Bay. There will be plenty of time for individual feedback. You will leave with more confidence in your stroke and tips for improvement. Led by Kayak Level 3 Instructors. 1.5 hour private session.

Turning and Steering

Have you been frustrated with boat control or edging? This workshop is dedicated to turning kayaks and identifying the high side of the turn. If it's windy, we analyze how the wind affects going straight. Led by ACA Level 3 Kayak Instructors. 1.5 hour private session.

Rudders and Draws

Kayak Rudders and Draws

Rudders and draws are essential in waves (like at the Statue) or close quarters. This class will teach draw strokes, bow rudders and stern rudders. Look cool when you raft up and land. We will paddle on the River if conditions permit. Led by ACA Level 3 Kayak Instructors. 1.5 hour private session.

Edging and Bracing

Can you balance and control your kayak by catching and holding edges? Learn the difference between inside and outside edges and how your upper and lower body can work independently but cooperatively for boat control. Led by ACA Level 3 Kayak Instructors. 2 hour private session.

T Rescues and Bow Rescues

Kayak T Rescue

Be  confident in your ability to rescue yourself and other kayakers. We focus on T rescues, bow rescues, and self-rescues with and without paddle floats. We will cover the core exercises of Eskimo dips and hip flicks to prepare you for rolling. Led by ACA Level 3 Kayak Instructors. 2 hour private session.

Prerequisite - Kayak Basics 3 or equivalent.

Kayak Rolling

Learn to roll a kayak from an upright position to upside down then back upright. This is the best self-rescue! We'll use hip snaps, leans and braces to develop an ability to roll. Paddlers should bring an inflatable paddle float. Led by ACA Level 3 Kayak Instructors. 2 hour private session.
