Meet Neal after 22 rivers, 22 states, and 7,500 miles

Neal began his trip on the Columbia River in Oregon on his 16-foot Old Town Penobscot canoe. On December 14th, he finishes at the Statue of Liberty. Please join him to celebrate and discuss his travels! His friend Dave Miller, author of The Complete Paddler, will moderate the chat and John Ruskey, founder of Quapaw Canoe Company, will strum a southern ditty over finger foods.

About Neal

Neal is the author of Down the Mississippi and, most recently, Homelands: A Memoir. A nomad, adventurer and storyteller, Neal’s reporting has taken him from night-market meetings with Chinese cyber-dissidents to mountaintop encounters with approaching super typhoons. His work from North America, Africa and the Far East has appeared in Der Spiegel, The New Yorker and on CNN International.

The big idea as I’m on along and in these rivers is to be able to try to document stories and talk to people from all walks of life, different ethnicities, different immigrant tales, the idea being when you string all these rivers and stories together, you’ll have the story of America.

– Neal Moore in The Waterways Journal
