Learn How To Kayak in New York City

Learn how to kayak in three 2.5 hour classes. We teach you all the essentials: how to get outfitted, maneuver on-water effectively and efficiently, rescue yourself, and navigate the open water. Get the Basics 3 Pack now, then book classes later. We teach according to American Canoe Association standards and add NYC-specific information. After finishing Basics Class 3, you qualify for Intermediate Tours, which are amazing group paddling adventures on NYC waters.

Class Descriptions

Kayak Basics 1: Learn to outfit yourself. Discover essential sea kayaking strokes. 2.5 hours.

Kayak Basics 2: Refine your steering. Learn to self-rescue, a safety essential. 2.5 hours.

Kayak Basics 3: Learn about water safety. Paddle out to scenic lively waters. 2.5 hours.

What To Bring

  • Shoes that can get wet
  • Quick-dry athletic clothes
  • Change of clothes for after
  • Your own lock for the lockers
  • Water bottle and energy snack

We Provide

  • Lifejacket, paddle, sea kayak
  • Restrooms, lockers, outdoor showers, changing rooms
  • Expert instructor who teaches and guides kayakers on NYC’s waterways



  • Ages 15+
  • 225 lb maximum
  • Go in order: Kayak Basics 1, 2, then 3
  • Credits are valid until November 2024
  • Must be able to do 10 push-ups and 10 squats
  • Take 2+ classes per week only if you do regular vigorous exercise
