4 lesson SUP Basics series

Learn to use a touring SUP, which goes faster and farther than our big easy SUPs and basic SUPs. The instructor starts everyone on a board that fits their body and preferences. Each person progresses to a touring board at some point in their lessons.

Developing body-board-paddle coordination takes time. Finish 1-2 lessons per week for optimal learning. It takes a few trips after Basics 4 for that ah ah! moment. If you have time, rent in the cove to practice between lessons. 

Get the Basics Lesson 4 Pack or take lessons a la carte. Lessons go in order: SUP Basics 1, 2, 3, then 4. After 4 lessons, adults qualify to be a member and enjoy intermediate trips.


SUP Basics 1: Fundamental! Learn to outfit yourself, then try paddling in the calm water between the Pier 84 Boathouse and Intrepid.

SUP Basics 2: Develop an efficient forward stroke using your legs and abdominals, while relaxing shoulders and arms. Learn to turn.

SUP Basics 3: Refine your forward stroke and learn how to capsize and re-mount. Knowing self-rescues is essential for your ongoing safety.

SUP Basics 4: Learn about NYC water safety then paddle out to try your newfound skills in the waves and wind. 

Private Lessons: Learn at your own pace or with your own mates. This may substitute for any Basics lesson. The Basics 4 Pack does not apply to privates.



  • Participants must be able to do 10 push-ups and 10 squats comfortably
  • Ages 15+
