Visitor Screening

For Experienced Visitors Joining Us in NYC

To maintain safety on trips beyond our Skyline Kayak Trip, we ask newcomers to do our Basics Classes or pass this screening. All activities are guide-led, there’s no rent-and-go here. Thank you for understanding.

Forms can’t be processed if:

  • Any field is blank or unknown.
  • Your experience was on a sit-on-top kayak.
  • You were not trained in bracing and rescues.

You can almost feel the spray and the movement as a small group of kayakers and paddleboarders navigate the turbulent, unpredictable whorls of water in the East River at Hell Gate, a place of conflicting tidal currents. The terrain demands technical and high-intensity execution of paddle strokes. The Upper East Side skyline is overcast and moody, echoing the foreboding nature of the water below.

How Screening Works

Passed: You provide complete responses that indicate mastery.

Not Passed: Your background is not yet a fit for open-water trips, and we’ll invite you to build your skills.

In NYC for a short stay?

Skip screening. If you’re visiting for a limited time, we recommend a private trip. You can book any day on our schedule and paddle on any of our 100+ boats or boards as fast as you’d like with a guide.
