Slow Down, Then Go Fast
Thursday evenings are led by Ronald Zavala—a multi-vessel expert in surf ski, SUP, kayak, and canoe sprinting—who focuses on relaxed, non-intimidating coaching to help you find your personal edge.
We start with skill drills most paddlers never slow down enough to try. After slow-motion skill work, we transition to sprint circuits for friendly competition and cardio. Find the fastest cadence you can sustain before things fall apart.
Each paddler goes for their own personal best time. We record our 1-mile time and work to improve our Personal Best Time Trials every week.
What’s Next?
By coming to this training regularly, you have the option to join our race team for the 10th Annual Hudson River Cup on Sunday, August 2! Race teammates can use our club kayaks and boards for the event. After August 2, our team will continue training for regional races together.

Prerequisites
Ages 18+ | Max weight 225 lbs
This is an intermediate activity. To participate, you must qualify through one of the pathways below.
- Kayakers: Complete Kayak Basic 1–3 or equivalent private lessons.
- Paddleboarders: Achieve a sub-17 minute mile time trial.
- Regulars: Already completed our intermediate trips.
- Experienced Guests: Pass our online Screening.

What To Bring
Please wear quick-dry athletic clothes. Bring a change of clothes, a padlock, a water bottle, snacks, and your favorite fitness tracker or the Strava app to log your session.
